Bret Widman

Pastor

I was once asked, “Who are you?” It’s such a profound question! I couldn’t really answer that question with just one thing. People are complex and ever growing and changing; that’s why I feel compelled & called to serve in ministry. I love to watch the process of growth in other people’s lives as I reflect about my own. I no longer am trying to fit God into my life, but am attempting to be caught up in the life that God is living on earth through His Spirit. The apostle Paul writes that we are to be “in Christ”. I guess that sums up, currently, what is happening in me….I’m forever trying to seek what God is up to and join him in the life He is living instead of trying to put him “in Bret”. I love to be with folks on a similar journey…seeking, listening, learning, and growing. I am not there yet, but I am throwing off what easily entangles and attempting to run without tripping.

Some stats about me are that I have been married to Janine since December 1991, we have 4 incredible daughters (Hannah, Claire, Madeline, and Kate) that are far better humans than I’ll ever be, and have a male cat named Lucky (just for some brotherhood in the house). I have served a couple of churches in the past and taught at a discipleship college in Canada for 6 years. I’m completing my Doctorate of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary and, hopefully, will be freed from higher learning in September 2012.

Bree Stairs

Youth Pastor

I am a team player! I grew up in sports and have always had a mindset of doing things as a team and being a servant leader while doing it. When I was in college, I was the captain of the volleyball team and the way I led was to work even harder and lead by example. I try to live my life that way. I want to work hard and serve others so that hopefully they will join in serving together. Together, as a church, we will continue to create an environment where our junior high and high school students will learn what it means to follow Jesus Christ. I look forward to joining the team, and community, of River Life!

Jackie Grubb

Office Manager

I’ve been attending River Life with my husband, Kip, and our children, Ian and Claire, since 1999 (back in the Turn Verein days) and started as the office administrator in 2005. When I started working here Ian was just heading off to college and it was a great time to transition back to work after being (mostly) a stay-at-home mom. It has been amazing to see how God was teaching and preparing me along the way for what I have been doing at River Life. Ian is now in grad school at NYU and Claire is in her sophomore year at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. To keep things from being too quiet now that we are empty nesters, Kip has started a business which he is currently running out of our home.

Michele Scarberry

Children’s Ministry Director

I’ve been married to Ken Scarberry since 1991. We have two children Josh, age 13 and Grace age 8. I grew up in East Sacramento and attended local public schools until the 5th grade when I transferred to Capital Christian School and graduated in 1988. I’ve been the Children’s Director at River Life for 2 years. Working with children is my passion. I love the unexpected things they do and say. Their enthusiasm and acceptance is refreshing and it energizes me. It is my hope that as the Children’s Director I am able to keep our program at a place where the children feel safe, welcome and loved. Our goal is to develop children into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. This means that our kids will grow up to love God and actively serve his purposes, and continue the process of growing to honor Christ in all areas of their lives.

We are always looking for others to serve with us to make this program even more successful. Come visit our program anytime!

I look forward to seeing you.
